SRINAGAR, India (AP) — For decades, India has focused its defense policy on its land borders with rivals Pakistan and China. Unless you are a maritime power you can never aspire to be a global power,” Chawla said. India, already a regional power, is positioning itself “as a global player today, an upcoming global power,” he said. Though we don’t own it, but we are probably the most capable and responsible resident naval power,” Chawla said. Chawla said India doesn't have “strength to project power into the South China Sea right now” because of the vast Chinese maritime assets there.

U.S. officials, after learning about the plot in late July, demanded that India investigate, a senior administration official said. High-level meetings and pledges of closer cooperation have continued, with Biden's secretaries of state and defense visiting Delhi this month. A senior U.S. administration official called the assassination plot a "serious matter" and said Washington expects India to stop such activities, even as the Biden administration pursues "an ambitious agenda to expand our cooperation" with India. Biden has made a priority of nurturing ties with India, hoping to counter China’s ambitions in Asia while drawing India away from Russia as the U.S. seeks to isolate Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. "Both the U.S. and India realize that they need each other, perhaps the U.S. a bit more than India."

Crude oil accounts for about a third of India's overall imports by value. Access to cheap Russian oil enabled India to cut imports from the Middle East, where prices strengthened following Saudi Arabia's voluntary additional supply cuts since July. India imported 69.06 million metric tons of Russian oil, equivalent to 1.85 million barrels per day (bpd), between January and September, commerce ministry data showed, including Russian oil imported from South Korea, Greece and Spain through transshipments. The average price for Russian oil delivered to Indian refiners was $525.60 per ton during that period, including shipping and insurance costs, Reuters calculations based on ministry data showed. Discounted Russian oil cuts India's crude import billIndia saved at least $2 billion in buying discounted Russian oilBy importing Russian oil, Indian refiners benefit from lower feedstock costs, which have buoyed gross refining margins and curtailed revenue loss from subsidised retail fuel sales.

India's moon rover and lander are set to wake up after a nearly month-long nap. For example, the moon rover confirmed the presence of sulphur in the lunar south pole region. India is the fourth country — after the US, Russia, and China — to land on the moon, and the first to ever land near the lunar south pole. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe lunar south pole region is of particular interest because it contains water ice. India's lunar lander and rover are the first to study the south pole region up-close and sample it directly.

NEW DELHI, July 14 (Reuters) - Indian refiners have settled some payments for Russian oil imports in Chinese yuan, but the U.S. dollar remains the dominant currency for such payments, a senior government official said. Reuters reported earlier this month that Indian refiners have started turning to the yuan for some payments for Russian oil. "Use of yuan for payment by India will remain limited, given India doesn't accumulate much yuan as export to China is low," the official, who did not want to be named, told Reuters. The official also said the Reserve Bank of India will release guidance for banks in two to three days to resolve some teething issues on the rupee trade mechanism. "The issue with rupee trade is that it can only work as a barter currency," the official said.

Some investors see India as the new China, but the South Asian economy still has to narrow a few gaps. These factors make it difficult for India to surpass China as the factory of the world. The country's potential appears brighter after its population surpassed China's, prompting many observers to tout the South Asian country as the next economy to watch. There's so much optimism about India that Goldman Sachs forecasts India's economy will surpass the US by 2075. Here are four ways India is still playing catch-up to its Asian rival, China.

India doesn't want the G20 to label Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a "war," per Reuters. Its officials tried to convince members to refer to it as a "crisis," but were met with pushback. (He has on occasion ignored his own rule and used the word "war," but the euphemism continues to be widespread in Russian official media.) China has also refused to call the war a "war," instead terming it a "crisis," per Bloomberg. "India is not keen to discuss or back any additional sanctions on Russia during the G20," an Indian official told Reuters.
But it isn't easy to fully replace China's supply chain ecosystem in any country — even one as vast as India. "India has a large labor pool, a long history of manufacturing, and government support for boosting industry and exports. Data irregularities improved China's position in 2018, according to a World Bank audit published in December 2020. India also has a history of protectionism, which makes it less competitive in terms of attracting large investments. That's precisely because they want to diversify, from having dependency on one country, like China, to a couple of locations."
Foundries are facilities that manufacture chips that other companies design. So there aren't many giant Indian chip firms and certainly no leading-edge manufacturing companies. "I have no doubt that India has a big role to play," Kotasthane said. Semiconductor design requires large numbers of skilled engineers and this is where India's strength lies," he added. So now, the next step is the effort to build an ecosystem where there is some Indian IP (intellectual property) by Indian companies," Kotasthane said.
